Project START (Steps to Accomplishing Real Life Transitions)In collaboration with the Lewiston School Department and the Lewiston Middle School, the Lewiston Education Fund created Project START in 2006-2007. This standard quarterly offering, known to students as Aspirations Avenue, encourages Lewiston Middle School students to “think forward.” Job interview skills, personal aspirations inquiry and links to career related programs at Lewiston High School set the stage for the future for both students and parents. School Grants ProgramSince 2002, the Lewiston Education Fund has allocated up to $20,000 per year toward supplemental “mini-grants” to the Lewiston Public Schools. Projects are chosen based on level of student impact, potential for independent sustainability and content. Past grants have promoted cultural awareness, supported reading as lifestyle and encouraged physical fitness and civic participation. The Grant process is designed to create opportunities for teachers to add depth and diversity to their year-round curricula. Please click Grant Request Form link for current application. Governance and Community SupportThe Lewiston Education Fund is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization managed by an active, Community-based Board of Directors. Education Fund activities are endorsed by the Lewiston School Committee but fully independent from the Committee process. The Superintendent of the Lewiston School Department is a permanent member of the Board of Directors. Economic development and quality of life in Lewiston are directly linked to quality public education. The Lewiston Educaiton Fund takes advantage of new creative opportunities that foster ongoing excellence in our schools but might otherwise be unaffordable. The Lewiston Education Fund is not organ ized to replace the responsibility of the regular operating budget of the school system and is therefore dependant on public support for its own operating budget. Grants and programs are made possible through the generous contributions of many businesses and individuals, including Peter Geiger, LL Bean, TD Banknorth, St. Mary's Hospital, Shaw's Supermarkets and Walmart. LEF is committed to the long-term growth and security of the funds placed in its trust. The Maine Community Foundation, which manages numerous endowments in Maine, was selected to professionally manage the assets in the fund's endowment.
